This is the website for Trial and Error, an independent rpg being developed in Sphere . It's a standard FF Style rpg, but with original 800*600 graphics, artwork, and music. The game is being made by myself, Dennis Rosenfeld, with music being composed by Jon Bell, aditional artwork by Pete Diamond, and a story written by Nic Carrier. The 4rd Demo is complete and is available now. The new demo offers 3 towns and 5 dungeons, fully playable. It should give about 3-4 hours of gameplay.
News:
21-Jan-2005. >> Minor Update.
A lot of people were havings problems getting their hands on the newest version of Sphere, which is required to play the game. In response to this, the newest version of Sphere is now included with the game download. For people who don't want to download 40 megs twice, it's also available seperately on the files page.

>> Trial and Error 4 (Public Beta) is out!!!
Woot!!!! Its Done! Its Done! Happy Day! It's not on Christmas, like i promised it would be, but it's only about a week late. Be warned, this a BETA version of the game (and not a complete game at that(the game last about 3 hours right now) so that means that there may be some bugs, or some rough edges. If you find any problems with the game, feel free to email me and let me know! I'll hopefully release a slighly more polished version in the next month or two, and then the final version of the game sometime in the indefinite future.
Get it at the files page here.
11-Nov-2004. >> New Demo coming by Christmas!
Ok, I apologize for never ever updating. I hope to make it up by giving some solid news this time. I will release Demo 4 sometime before Christmas. Unfortunately it won’t be the complete game, but at least it will be a significant update from the last version of the game. Some of the new features are: Joystick Support, more items, more levels, a better story, new artwork, and hopefully less buggy gameplay. To whet your appetite, I’ve updated the screenshots page, with some images that aren’t 2 or 3 years old.
25-July-2004. >> We're not dead yet!
Some people may be wondering if this game has reached 'dead project' status yet... Well, I'm glad to say that's not at all true. Progress on the game is quite slow (it is a ridiculous amount of work), and that's why the last demo is a year and a half old now. I decided at that point that I wouldn't make another release until I had the final game ready. Well, it's still not ready and won't be for a while yet, I'm sorry to say. However I'm planning on revamping the website soon, and Ill try to post a lot of new info when I do. So, check back in the next month or two, and I should have lots of new stuff to show off!
2-Oct-2003. >> We are moved!
Ok, the site has moved to its new location, so update your bookmarks or whatever. I had too many problems with my previous host, so this should be more stable. And yes progress on the game is still continuing, slowly as ever.
13-Sept-2003. >> Moving Soon...
You may have noticed that the site went down for over a month.. My web hosting went crazy. Anyway, I'll be relocating this website shortly, probably within the next week. As soon as its up and running, I'll post the new links.
16-June-2003. >> Some New Tiles...
Just a tiny update to show some that progress is being made on new maps. This is a pic of a new cave level, that is more or less finished. I'm planning on designing between 2-6 new tilesets, depending on how much time I have left.
30-May-2003. >> Things have been quiet...
So, its been a few months since the release of ver 3. I'd just like to let people know that this project is certainly not dead and is still being worked on. I took a month off from working on the game after i released the demo, and then a number of personal problems (sickness, surgery, etc.) occured, and that kept me away from working on the game until just recently. Now, I'll be focussing on things again, and trying to get into high gear. A -few- things have been done since the last demo, including: an improved timing engine for combat (should reduce obscene wait times on slow computers...), joystick support, some improved animations for the main charcters. (walking sideways), and a few minor details.
My target date for the final release was August 31st, but because I haven't been working much in the last 3 months, October is more likely. For once i'd like to get things finished on time...

>> 3rd Demo Released!!!
That's right, its finally here. trial and error ver 3.0 has been released. I hope its a significant step up from the previous version, released over a year ago. The final version of the game is a while away yet, but if there a lot of bugs with this one, i might release a t&e 3.1 version.
Anyway, get it at the files page here.
30-Jan-2003. >> Almost there...
Well, things are progressing slowly but surely. I've decided that the demo will be released on February 10th or perhaps earlier(if its ready). I think its over 99% finished. Tomorrow, I'll finish up the last bits, and then i'll have 1 week of beta testing and polishing up. And hopefully I'll make the website a little nicer looking and start promoting the game more too.
13-Jan-2003. >> Well, Its getting closer...
Okay. Im aiming for release at the end of januaury or mid-february. Im not sure exactly what i'll have to release at that time, well see. At the very least, the first level of the game (the game should have 5 levels) is more or less complete and playable. Hopefully, the second level will be done before the demo date too. the maps for it are 90% done so it may come together quickly. I might add some new screenshots if i have time. Also the profiles page has been updated. I think when the demo is out, ill revamp this web-page a bit.
15-Oct-2002. >> Okay, progress report time.
The new world-map is looking good.
And in the middle of redoing the castle tileset. (I don’t why
I have to re-do all my tiles 3 times. I guess I’m obsessive…)
The goal is to have 3 hours of gameplay, but I don’t know if
that’s realistically possible. Well, we’ll see.
To do:
- The Castle needs to be finished, and the temple level needs monsters and chests added to it.
- I *should* redo the magic spells, but I don’t know if will before the next demo.
- I need to add a few more weapons and armor for each character.
- I need to make up a new boss for this demo.
- I still don’t have any music. (but I don7t expect to find any by the demo release date…)
- Maybe I need combat backgrounds for the castle and the temple.
10-Oct-2002. >> New Site Up! Again!
Well, the old New Site didn't last long. The new New site will hopefully last longer. I'm paying for it so it better... In other news expect demo 3 of Trial and Error some time soon. Hopefully before Halloween. (maybe)
7-Aug-2002. >> New Site Up!
Okay, the new site is up. If some sections arent aren't working right now, they should appear within the next few days.
